Casino Gambling in Galveston

Casino gambling is being considered to revive Galveston's economy. Growing up in Mississippi I saw what the casino industry did to revive Biloxi Mississippi. According to the Houston Chronicle, casino gambling contributed $22.5 million to the city of Biloxi in fiscal year 2008.

Galveston is one of those cities that I have always felt could be beautiful. Build up the beaches, clean up the water, build interesting and lovely buildings along the waterfront, plant tons of palm trees. It could look like a paradise. Imagine the the influx of tourists just from Houston alone. A place to lay on the beach, gamble, relax, and have fun just an hour away. Bringing in casino gambling could give Galveston all those things.

The time is ripe. Reconstruction from the hurricane begs for a better Galveston. Jobs are needed and casinos would bring that. More restaurants and hotels would open. Jobs would be plentiful. Even in a bad economy people like their pleasures. If they can drive a short way to get to those pleasures, they will certainly do that.

Polls show that the people of Galveston want casinos, but it actually happening doesn't look good because of the obstacles. The Galveston city charter has a provision prohibiting a vote on casino gambling until the Legislature makes it legal. Even if the Legislature did pass it (and they would have to do that by amending the constitution), Gov. Perry is likely to veto it because he opposes casino gambling according to the Houston Chronicle.

That's a shame because Galveston needs a shot in the arm. It needs to be revived. It needs to be the kind of place I imagine it could be.

There is a large difference

There is a large difference between online and offline gambling. In online gambling they have a chance to monitor and find abusers. That is much harder in offline gambling. If you buy lottery tickets you can do it anonymously in fifty shops in the same day and no six would suspect that you were an abuser. If you deposit funds fifty times in an online casino the management will notice. You are not anonymous playing in an online casino.
