Disney’s “As the Bell Rings” short series is in its second season—with a Texas female lead

The Next Miley Cyrus? Fort Worth-raised Lindsey Black, 16, plays Lexi in Disney's short As the Bell Rings. She started acting at age 4, progressing to star in Little Red Riding Hood by grade school. When she told her parents she wanted to star in film, their response was typical.

“They said, ‘Are you sure you don’t want to stick with school theater?’” Black says. She got her way, signing up with the Kim Dawson talent agency in Dallas.

The Dawson agency arranged for Black to audition for Disney pilot Life Bites. The station didn’t bite. But they called Black back after As the Bell Rings’ female lead Demi Lovato left the series to star in Camp Rock, a Disney Channel Original Movie with the Jonas Brothers.

Black says she likes the plot’s short format.

“It’s definitely much more fast-paced than anything else,” Black says. “These are short little bursts and they don’t completely connect. So it was fun to get through different crazy things throughout the season, not following a straight storyline. The comedy is bold and bright and neat.”

Black finished shooting season two of the Disney shorts in January. Now Black lives in Los Angeles with her mother, and is awaiting her sister’s arrival in nearby Santa Clarita for college.

“It’s a half-hour to three hours away, depending on traffic,” Black says.

Not terribly different from Dallas.
