Patrick earned the nickname “hairdresser to the authors” when Oxford American Magazine, then published by John Grisham, covered Beauty and the Book's grand opening in Jefferson, Texas, in 2000.

The nickname has rung true since. Patrick styles all the authors that read at her store, sometimes for the public’s view. And she doesn’t hesitate to contact those author friends who she thinks need a good styling.

“When I first opened, I wanted to do Pat Conroy’s (The Prince of Tides) hair,” Patrick says. “I wanted to get rid of his combover. I called his publisher and said, ‘I would like Pat to be my first client. He’s an attractive man, but he’s not foolin’ anyone with that swirly round thing.’” She’s styled everyone from Don Henley to Joan Rivers to the B-52’s since.

Beauty and the Book is also home base for the Pulpwood Queen’s Book Club, the largest meeting and discussing book club in the world, according to Patrick, and likely the only one to require its members wear tiaras. The club has been profiled on everything from The Oprah Winfrey Show to Newsweek.

Patrick was born with style. She was once a hairstylist in Manhattan—that’s Kansas, Manhattan—and later a book publisher’s representative. When Patrick lost her publishing job, the next step was obvious to her. “I had tons of books,” Patrick says. “I told my husband, if we can use your old office, we can convert it to a salon bookstore! And then my dad came down from Kansas and helped convert it into my shop.

hairdresser to the authors “I bussed in every elementary student from Jefferson schools. And we did story hours for kids from Texas authors. Eventually we moved to town in a historic building.”

That was the start of Patrick’s now famous annual convention in January, which tops off the shop’s literacy weekend with “The Ball of Hair,” featuring—what else? Big hair. And debauchery from the world’s Pulpwood Queens.

Patrick’s shop now attracts clients from Austin, Dallas and beyond. Part of her draw owes to her recurring serendipity. For example, after being mobbed by media coming off a plane for a Willie Nelson picnic years ago, Patrick discovered the “two ugliest men” she had been sitting next to were The Who’s Roger Daltry and Pete Townshend.

Patrick’s location doesn’t hurt. “Jefferson is the bed and breakfast capital of Texas, and we have all those movies being filmed in Shreveport right now,” she says. “Celebrities come here on their days off.” She recounts George Bush’s body double (for Oliver Stone’s new movie W.) and Kevin Costner’s wardrobe mistress as two recent visitors.

Paulina Porizkova came by and hung out for four days during one literacy convention.

“She said, ‘this is so cool, I can go anywhere and nobody mobs me,’” Patrick says. “I used to go to Indonesia and Bali to get away. Now I’m going to come to Jefferson.”
